OLnet Team meeting 30/6/2010

Present: Patrick, Karen, Giota, Kasia, Tina, Michelle, Canan, Ann, Janet, Liam, Scott, Nick

Apologies: Simon, Anna, Andreia, Elpida, Eileen, Grainne

1. Round table introductions

Scott Leslie introduced himself he is:

  • From Victoria, Canada BCCampus
  • His OLnet fellowship proposal is about tracking resources
  • He is building from his experience with repository. Tracking of the content will allow greater understanding and also enhance the ability to report to funders.
  • Connections were made to existing work by Nick Freear (tracking material by tag markers), Liam Green-Hughes (using aggregation to bring together related feeds), and Michelle Bachler (using Cohere gadgets for evidence gathering).

 2. Review of evidence

looking at Elpida’s Drupal Book at http://olnet.org/node/399. Comments gathered were:

  • Very helpful
  • That it could provide a feed in to support the evaluation that could be carried out
  • The example covered work that has already been published - is it easier because there are papers already written? (Probably not necessarily.)
  • Add in further links for related papers, e.g. on ORO and the wiki created by Yannis
  • olnet.org - is this a good way to use the site?
  • Element of filtering is required - does that imply delay
  • The model could apply to interviews/workshops, some already on cloudworks (Giota)
  • Need to be careful of ethics and restrictions of open data
  • May in some cases need to just report results and anonymise
  • Consent is ok in this case
  • What works for Elpida may not work the same way for everyone/every type of work.
  • The Drupal Book approach looks to be transferable and may also support production of hardcopy books (e.g. Blurb.com)
  • Agreed that it would certainly be useful for Elpida to proceed.
  • Website
  • Will add a way to highlight the evidence and research outcomes, including ORO listed publications. To be a=taken forward by Karen with developer group.

3. Conferences

  • CETIS developer meeting - blog on olnet http://olnet.org/node/417
  • Mozilla addon meeting this evening
  • HESTIA – Liam and Elpida to present at Oxford conference on 1st July
  • OTTER online Symposium 5 July http://olnet.org/node/410 - clash with IET internal event means that it may not be possible to have anyone attend.
  • WIKISYM 2010 7-9 July – Giota & Kasia attending. Giota pointed out that several sessions are open and so others can join in (e.g. Scott to ask questions of Wikimedia developers). Giota will also create appropriate clouds
  • Open Educational Resources International Showcase (JISC) 23 July – Scott, Giota and Andreia to attend.
  • OpenEd 2010 2-4 Nov – Speakers must inform the organizers that they will attend. Registration needs to happen before the deadline. Patrick & Karen registered.
