Live notes from OLnet team meeting, 2 June 2010

Present: Andreia, Janet, Kasia, Liam, Tina, Svetlana, Canan, Karen, Doug, Anna

Apols: Patrick, Ann, Simon, Michelle, Giota, Eileen, Elpida, Nick

Welcome to Svetlana

Welcome to Svetlana, new OLnet fellow with us for this month. Also planning a visit to the Open University of Catalunya. UNESCO Institute for IT in Education, where she works, is launching a project on OER for Russia and CIS.

Feedback from conferences

  • Networked Learning in Denmark - Elpida, Grainne, Anna, Giota went - Keynote speeches from Wenger and Engestrom, were recorded and now available online. Very interesting account of differences between Communities of Practice and Activity Theory. Links with our Virtual Workshop idea using a Skype/Wiki/Forum setup. Presented the 'Fairy Rings' paper successfully. Would be good target for OLnet next year; not a strong technology format. Proceedings online.
  • CALRG Conference 2010 here at the OU - Patrick, Doug, Canan, Tina, Kasia all went - presentation on OLnet went really well with a lot of positive feedback. Doug made some liveblog notes. Canan (organiser) would like the slides from the presentations so she can make them available.
  • E-Learning Africa - Andreia - was massive. Very interesting. Had full audience for her talk. Potential follow-up leads - a group in Egypt, possibly similar work to hers with Unisul; Livingstone University contact wants to work with us; University of Cape Town contact wants to stay in touch. We have had a flurry (a small flurry) of people registering on the site. Also met two ex-IET people - Mpine (did a PhD here), now at UNISA, gave a presentation, sent regards, Alex Little (previously a developer in IET and KMi, now volunteer in Ethiopia working with lecturers on ICT in teaching). He wants to explore sending a couple of Ethiopian academics here as fellows.
  • Futur-e Learning, Turkey - Kasia - Presented her paper, met Engin (ex-OLnet Fellow). Has a physical copy of the proceedings available, and her slides are on Slideshare. Luis Palacios (ex-IET) sent regards.

Website and structure update

Karen presented her diagram showing a structure of the OLnet team, which was broadly welcomed.

Karen is 'owning' the OLnet.org website, in the sense of making day-to-day decisions about content etc, but the Project Steering Group, which would meet (say) quarterly, would make strategic decisions about its role and purpose.

We have a statement of purpose and role for the site, and a list of 'quick fixes' for development.

Cohere session next week

Those attending (Tues 9 June at 1.30pm) need to prepare their laptops as detailed in  email from Anna to the OLnet list (sent Tue 25 May 12:56) - need to register with Cohere, and bring a laptop with headset and microphone. Also need application for screen capture - e.g. Camtasia or Snapz Pro or Jing Pro.

Upcoming conferences

Next Hewlett meeting

Regular progress FlashMeeting update 16:00 on Thursday 10 June. Not sending a paper report in advance, will use a version of the CALRG presentation through FlashMeeting tools. If there are things which need to be flagged up, make sure they are on the website by then!

AOB

Brazilian visitors coming to the OU from Rio de Janeiro, on Tue 8 June; Andreia coordinating the visit. Possibly coordinate with activity for Svetlana.

Chuck Severance is coming (back) on Monday for a week, working with KMI. Then Scott Leslie coming last week in June.
