Patrick welcomed everyone back from a meeting hiatus over the summer. Three new people welcomed - Sandra Wills, Markus Deimann (OLnet visiting fellows), Yishay Mor (new senior lecturer in IET).

Patrick McAndrew is presenting on “Open Educational Resources in the OU: an OLnet update”
He says there are many slides in the presentation – his last version had three slides, this one has 99.
Much activity on Open Educational Resources (OER) in the OU. OLnet in particular is a project looking at the research, drawing it all together. Project site at olnet.org. Has been running for 2 years, one more to go.

Based in Xerox Research Centre Europe, in a Château!
Xerox Innovation Group - includes XRCC, XRCW, PARC, and also XRCE - her group. Linguistic analysis of texts. Parsing and Semantics - 10 people; main tool is XIP - Xerox Incremental Parser, their tool they use for analysis. It's dependency parsing, analysis according to their syntactic structure, use it for semantic analysis. English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese - 20 languages, but not all at the same level. Many interesting applications (natural language processing), in many domains - biology, education, digital libraries, litigation, health.
Main topic today: finding rhetorical functions related to research problems (in scholarly articles).

Yimin is a Visiting Fellow from China, for about two months. Jenny Preece is another OLnet Fellow visiting, from Maryland. She's Dean of the iSchool - not Computer Science, not Education, but focus on information and aspects of information storage, searching, retrieval, communications. Most projects work closely with people in computer science, digital humanities, etc.

Welcome to Svetlana, new OLnet fellow with us for this month. Also planning a visit to the Open University of Catalunya. UNESCO Institute for IT in Education, where she works, is launching a project on OER for Russia and CIS.

Cameras on, being recorded - six cameras capturing us talking in the JLB Ambient Lab. For research purposes.
Broad objective is for us to have a better understanding of what we're doing with the project, greater clarity of everyone's activity, as a foundation for building on. And to have a nice time.
